JOB PURPOSE

The R&D Chemist I is responsible for independent hands on preparation of developmental emissions control catalysts for mobile and/or stationary source applications as called out in a program plan. Work consists of utilizing plant equipment to batch and coat prototype samples on a lab scale up through pilot scale. Duties also include suggesting and carrying out plant improvement projects to improve plant safety and efficiency.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Independently utilizes mixing and coating equipment to prepare prototype samples meeting all quality requirements and submitting finished samples for all relevant testing.

  • Initiates and leads discussions with other departments such as program sponsors, maintenance, analytical services, quality control, and engineering to overcome processing obstacles and complete program plan sample preparation within expected timings.

  • Effectively plans out work and communicates sample preparation timings to scientists and supervisor and can manage several projects at one time.

  • Clearly documents preparation steps taken as well as key processing observations, using appropriate documentation to record experimental data which can be used in data summaries and NPI phase review meetings.

  • Performs standard and non-standard calculations to prepare first-time prototype samples or troubleshoot processing issues.

  • Completes monthly responsibilities such as pilot plant responsibility, inventory, 5S activities, and monthly report.

  • Maintains positive and effective work relationships within PcD as well as with other groups and works to build a network of resources to aid in troubleshooting.

  • Recognizes possible health and environmental risks and takes action to communicate and address these hazards by scheduling and attending job safety analysis exercises.

  • Trains new technicians and technical staff in basic pilot plant tasks and sample preparation.

  • Consults with sponsors and engineers to identify preparation methods when working with novel raw materials and arrange meetings to troubleshoot when technical issues arise.

  • Operate all equipment and instrumentation for catalyst preparation and experimental studies in a safe manner and keep working areas safe and clean.

  • Be aware of health and safety issues associated with experimental plans and notify appropriate personnel of such issues.

  • Handle all chemicals in a safe and proper manner with regard to chemical properties and procedures listed on SDS sheets. Properly dispose of waste generated by preparations and experiments.

  • Maintain inventory of experimental samples. Responsible for accurate accounting of PGM following defined procedures.

  • Comply with all Johnson Matthey Hazardous Waste procedures and local, state, and federal regulatory requirements.

  • Comply with all environmental & health and safety federal, state, local regulations and company policies.

  • To carry out or take on any other duties which are within the employee’s skills and abilities whenever reasonably instructed.

Requirements for the role:

  • Bachelor's Degree (Degree in Chemistry or Applied Science Preferred).

  • Associates Degree (or equivalent college coursework) or Advanced Training Certificate in related field with 0 - 2+ years of related experience.

  • High School Diploma with 4+ years of related experience; or any equivalent relevant combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work.

  • Awareness of NPI process and how it is utilized within JM

  • General chemistry and strong math skills
